Chinese Medicine

Chinese Medicine is a holistic and complete healthcare system that has existed for thousands of years. It is founded on belief that the body is a microcosm of nature and reflects the elements existing in our natural world.

A foundational philosophy is there is no division between the mind, body, and spirit; each of these are equally considered within this paradigm of medicine.

Modalities commonly used within Chinese Medicine include acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, gua sha, bodywork, nutrition, and lifestyle recommendations.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the many modalities used within Chinese Medicine. It entails the insertion of thin, sterile needles into specific acupuncture points that fall along the energy channels, which correlate to the different organ systems in the body. It functions by bringing the body back to homeostasis through promoting blood flow, increasing circulation, decreasing inflammation, regulating the nervous system, and strengthening our vital bodily functions.

Points chosen are based on signs, symptoms, and Chinese Medicine diagnostics including pulse and tongue presentation. While the body is constantly evolving and changing, so will your acupuncture treatments.

By decreasing stagnation of energy flow and increasing resources in the body, maintenance and prevention of disease occurs.

Herbal Medicine

Chinese Herbal Medicine involves the combination of single herbs based on classical herbal formulas. These formulas are tried and true, and are further customized to the individual based on the presentation of disease. Each herb has an energetic and specific function, and when combined properly they work synergistically to achieve balance in the body. Compliance and consistency of taking herbal formulas can reinforce acupuncture treatments, which may strengthen results while preventing illness.

Bodywork

Bodywork is often included in sessions with Liza. Depending on the individual, she may include cupping, gua sha, massage, and acupressure into sessions.

About Cupping:

Cupping therapy is a noninvasive technique which involves a local suction on the skin via heat placed internally of a glass cup. This suction helps to relax the muscles, break up adhesions in the fascia, increase blood flow, and release toxins stored in the muscles. It is often recommended to patients suffering from muscular pain, joint pain, respiratory disorders, and skin disorders.

About Gua Sha:

Gua sha, is translated as "to scrape sand" (or in medical terms, petechiae). Petechiae are the small red dots or bruising which appear after scraping. These markings highlight areas of blood stagnation and blockage. It is highly effective in relaxing the muscles and breaking up tight fascia. Gua sha can help increase range of motion and reduce pain and tightness.

[Please note that patients can experience bruising and soreness following a cupping or gua sha session. These responses are normal and part of the therapeutic process.]

Lifestyle + Nutrition

The emphasis on diet and daily habits plays a crucial role in the correction and prevention of disharmony. Anything done in excess will contribute to disease, i.e. moderation is key.

Eating seasonally with ample variety (ideally local and organic), while paying mind to the nature, temperature, and energetics of different foods can allow the body to thrive. Furthermore, the ideal balance of activity and rest will look different for each individual.

During treatments, Liza provides recommendations including a variety of foods to include into your diet as well as exercises that are suited to your needs. These coincide with diagnostics according to Chinese Medicine.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion utilizes heat therapy and energetics of the herb mugwort (Ai Ye). The primary action of mugwort is to regulate blood flow and warm the channels. When held over specific acupuncture points, it can help to reduce pain and inflammation, relieve damp conditions and itching, increase energy, invigorate the blood, and stregthen the immune system, just to name a few. It is particularly renowned for its ability to treat diseases which are rooted in the blood.
